A PUBLICATION OF THE YFU-USA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

Volume 2, Issue 8 (page 2)

December 1999

NAC Progress Report Continued

The YFU-USA Alumni Association Brochure was completed and distributed on a limited basis this past summer. It has met with overwhelming success and fantastic results whenever it has been mailed out to alumni. Two-thirds of the respondents to the brochure have made contributions to the Association and many have expressed their desire to get involved. If you would like a copy of the brochure mailed to you please contact Mary Murphy at 1-800-424-3691 ext. 138.

The Alumni Referral List has 100 participants for the current program year. Nearly 200 additional alumni have applied to join the referral list and share their experience with others interested in being a YFU exchange student. In September, the list was added to the main Youth for Understanding website, making it accessible to all prospective students with internet access.

The Follebout Fund was established this past June in memory of Diana Follebout, a long time volunteer, host mother, staff member, and supporter of YFU alumni. Money from the fund will be used to support alumni development and training in the United States.

National Alumni Council members continue to network and increase their involvement with other YFU constituencies. During the past six months NAC members have given presentations at Regional Volunteer Conferences, the American Overseas Staff Conference and to International Center staff. In addition, the NAC continues to have members on the Board of Trustees, the National Volunteer Leadership Council and the Diversity Outreach Team.

American Overseas Pre-Departure materials have been collected from all across the nation to be put in electronic format. A re-write of the materials in collaboration with YFU national office staff is planned for the future.

The YFU Alumni Contact Network Network has been established to help fundraising efforts as well as to connect YFU Alumni with each other and YFU. Currently there are 20 people who have stepped up to become Class Contacts to go out and find their missing classmates!

If you want more information about anything discussed in this newsletter or are interested in joining our staff please contact Julia Martin or (212) 614-1242. Your thoughts and ideas are welcome!
New Fellowship Opportunity!

For all those who are interested in volunteering abroad next year, The LaFetra Operating Foundation is now accepting applications for its Fellows Program 2000

The LaFetra Operating Foundation was established in May of 1997 with a mission to promote international voluntary service that contributes to a greater sense of global responsibility. The Fellows Program, a unique eight-month, fellowship was created to support this mission by providing financial resources and training to individuals from low-income backgrounds looking for an opportunity to travel and volunteer with communities in other countries.
