ALUMNI LINK

A PUBLICATION OF THE YFU-USA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

Volume 2, Issue 5

September 1999

Back to School…

Well, it’s that time again, summer is drawing to a close and YFU students all over the country are headed back to school. This month’s Alumni Link focuses on some of the different opportunities for alumni to continue their international education and their involvement with YFU. Read on to find out about the many different educational opportunities available to high school and college age students.

Internships:

A great way to continue your involvement with YFU and possibly even return abroad is to become a YFU intern. Regional Offices, the US-National Office and the International Offices are looking for interns.

On page two we’ve compiled a sample list of some current internships. Alumni in pursuit of internships in countries or regions not listed, please send a letter to the Alumni Affairs Office that indicates which YFU country or region you are interested in and why. In your letter state what skills and experience you can offer and what timeframe and length of time you would be available for such an internship. The Alumni Affairs Office or International Secretariat will then help facilitate contact with the international offices for such opportunities.

The alumni web site has a whole page dedicated to internships and other YFU opportunities. (Go to the web page for a complete list of current openings. )The web page also has tips on writing your cover letter and resume for YFU. In addition, there is a link to an Educational Travel page for non-YFU internship and study abroad opportunities.

Study Abroad Web Page...

Currently under construction, this new web page will help answer the BIG QUESTION most alumni have soon after returning to the U.S. from their YFU experience: How can I return overseas? The BIG ANSWER is that there are many paths to follow and many destinations to explore. At the college or university level, this exciting answer is generically referred to as "Study Abroad."

The YFU Alumni Study Abroad page will cover such major topics as Year, Semester and Summer study abroad programs, dedicated study abroad search engines, work abroad programs, discount student travel agencies, and most importantly, YFU-USA alumni recommended programs. There is also an electronic questionnaire available for alumni to explain their college level study abroad experience and actually rate their program. This page will be maintained and further developed to eventually include perhaps a list of "Study Abroad Friendly" colleges and universities recommended by alumni to which recent YFU returnees may wish to apply.
