YFU alumni were recently asked the following questions…the answers were so much fun that we decided to share them with you. Keep in mind that by joining the yfu-alums@yahoo.com group you will be able to take part in discussions, look for old friends and “Remember When...”. I knew I had been an exchange student for too long when…or I knew I had been in (?) Country for too long when…???? I knew that I had been in Switzerland too long when chocolate was passé and the Matterhorn was for tourists. ~ Bill Wedgworth - Switzerland, (Summer) 78 I knew I had been in Germany too long when I turned to my friend in class and asked him how to say "afternoon" in English. ~ Brenden Sparks - CB Germany 97-98 I knew I had been in Japan for too long when I had learned to navigate the entire trip to my school on my bicycle without using my hands the whole way. ~ Galen Carter I knew I had been in Australia for too long when my own country's accent sounded more ridiculous than the Australian's when I first arrived. ~ Mary Froeba I knew I was an exchange student in Germany too long when I was being asked directions, in English, and I forgot how to speak my own language!!! ~ J. Roberts - CB Germany 00-01 I knew I was an exchange student when all the cars looked like matchbox toys. ~ Lori Reeves - Switzerland 73 I knew I had been in Australia for too long when people stopped asking, "Are you an American?" when I first met them. ~ Mary Froeba I knew I had to be an exchange student to Brazil when.... I woke up at 5 o'clock in the morning so I would have time to get ready for school and watch World Cup games that came on at 6:30. AND I knew I had to be an exchange student for too long when... I tried to speak Spanish (the only foreign language I knew) to everyone, including those who I knew didn't understand me. ~ Plaper I knew I'd been an exchange student for too long when I came back to the US and while unpacking I yelled for my mother (from my bedroom through the house to her in the kitchen) and instead of yelling "Mom!" out of habit I yelled "Mama!" like I was calling my Greek mother. ~ Shelley Aday - Greece 76 |
