The Admissions Process

Step One - Submit your application packet.

Your Admissions Counselor will reserve a place for you in the program of your choice once your completed application and appropriate fees have been received. If your first choice is not available, you will have a space reserved in the first available alternate program listed on your application or you will be added to the waitlist.

Step Two - Get interviewed.

While your application is being reviewed, you will be called for an interview. The interview process is part of the selection criteria and is an opportunity for you and your parents to ask questions as well.

Step Three - Get accepted.

Selection is based on your application and interview. Your Admissions Counselor will inform you whether you have been accepted and provide you with additional instructions and orientation materials. Later, you'll receive other materials by mail and be invited to a pre-departure orientation in your area.

Step Four - Go Global!

Get your passport and be ready for your international experience of a lifetime!

FAQs

Q: I already graduated from high school. Can I still go?

A: Yes! Many of our partners allow 13th Year Abroad students. Even if you've already been accepted to college, you can ask them to defer your enrollment. If you have questions, please call our Admissions Counselors for more information.

Q: Does my family have to host an exchange student?

A: No, but hosting can be a great experience! A student comes to the US for a year or semester and lives as a member of your family. Your family gives the student room and board and the student attends your local high school. Plus, if your family has hosted for at least six months, you qualify for a host family discount of $800 for a year or semester program or $500 for a summer program. To find out more about hosting, read through the Host Families section or call toll-free 1-800-TEENAGE.

Q: How is YFU funded?

A: YFU USA is an educational, registered, non-profit organization. The tuition paid by students and their families provides about 70% of YFU revenues. The balance comes from governments, corporations, foundations, and individuals worldwide.
All YFU programs are subject to change or cancellation without prior notice.
