Eligibility
- Open to high school students who are children of employees of Mitsui USA. Parent must be a full-time employee with Mitsui USA or one of its qualified companies and must be employed by Mitsui at least one year prior to the application deadline. Non-US citizens with permanent residency may apply. Previous recipients are not eligible. Preference is given to applicants with prior Japanese language study, however previous language study is not required. (Mitsui USA/Employee)
- Full summer scholarships for students studying Japanese language in the Atlanta, Detroit, Houston, New York City, San Francisco, or Tennessee public school systems. Students must attend Japanese language classes during the year in which the scholarship is awarded (school year before the summer exchange to Japan). Non-US citizens with permanent residency may apply. Previous recipients are not eligible. (Mitsui USA/Community)

Applicant's birth date must fall between
April 2, 1990, and April 1, 1993.

Scholarship Covers:
- Round-trip international travel
- Round-trip domestic travel
- Placement with a carefully selected host family
- Regional orientation for scholarship recipients and parents
- Preparatory materials
- Three-day Japan specific orientation at the beginning of the program
- Support services in host country
Scholarship Recipients are Responsible for:
- Passport
- Visa fees (if necessary)
- Any excess luggage tariffs
- Required overseas medical insurance (many insurance policies will cover students while traveling abroad)
- Personal spending money
- Upon returning home, scholarship winners are expected to complete at least one presentation in their school or community to share their experiences, teach others about the culture in their host country, and encourage other students to participate in foreign exchange.
NOTE:
All applicants will be notified by mail of their status in April.
YFU and Mitsui USA reserve the right to change or cancel a part or all of the program in the event such actions are deemed necessary for ensuring student safety under certain circumstances. Final decisions will be made prior to student departures expected in June 2008.
