Eligibility
A 50% scholarship available for a YFU summer, semester, or year program student departing in the summer of 2008. Open to students with freshman, sophomore, junior or senior standing at the time the application is submitted. Students must hold a minimum 2.0 on a 4.0 scale for the summer program and a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Scholarship recipient will be responsible for the remaining cost of the program tuition. Please see individual country pages for program availability and tuition information on the YFU USA web page at www.yfu-usa.org. Applicants must reside in Michigan.
*STUDENTS MUST BE AVAILABLE IN LATE MARCH FOR A GROUP INTERVIEW. The interview date has been set for Monday, March 31.
Age Requirements
Applicant's birth date must fall between
September 1, 1989, and July 15, 1993.

Scholarship Covers:
- Round-trip international travel
- Round-trip domestic travel
- Placement with a carefully selected host family
- Regional orientation for scholarship recipients and parents
- Preparatory materials
- Support services in host country
Scholarship Recipients are Responsible for:
- Passport
- Visa fees (if necessary)
- Any excess luggage tariffs
- Required overseas medical insurance (many insurance policies will cover students while traveling abroad)
- Personal spending money
- Upon returning home, scholarship winners are expected to complete at least one presentation in their school or community to share their experiences, teach others about the culture in their host country, and encourage other students to participate in foreign exchange.
- Tuition balance not covered by scholarship, due two weeks after award notification

All applicants will be notified by mail of their status in April.
Scholarship-specific Essays
Please respond to each questions separately, numbering your responses. Essays should be approximately 200 words each.
1. What are your plans for the year following your return from your Youth For Understanding experience, and how do you plan to promote the program at that time?
2. Write a personal statement. It should tell about yourself and describe your activities in the past which show your willingness to commit time to your community, school, church, or other organizations.
3. Why are you applying for this scholarship? What qualities do you possess that will set you apart from other students applying to this scholarship, and how will those qualities help you to promote YFU USA upon your return?
